New Kevo lock by Kwikset combines Bluetooth technology and mobile app to allow one-touch entry

Last month’s Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) trade show in Denver introduced hundreds of future technologies in many different categories. One of these technologies was Kwikset’s Kevo Bluetooth lock.

Kwikset is a manufacturer of locks and locksets that we see on our doors on a daily basis. However, their new Kevo lock has a feature that is not included in most locks we are used to seeing. The main and most technologically advanced feature of the Kevo lock is that you can open it with the touch of a finger.

The Kevo lock works by turning your smartphone into an electronic key (eKey). The user downloads the Kevo mobile app once and after that it simply runs in the background, allowing the user to essentially forget about it. This means the user never has to actually open the app in order to unlock the door, they just need to have their phone.  The combination of the app and Bluetooth allow the deadbolt to recognize and respond to just the touch of a finger.

Aside from the obvious convenience of being able to open a lock by just touching it, the Kevo lock has other features that have consumers excited. Using the Kevo app, you can send an eKey to anyone that has a Kevo-compatible smartphone. This means that other family members or even someone visiting for the day can use the Kevo system to unlock the door. You can easily set time restrictions on the eKey so that it will only allow that person entrance for a certain amount of time. This is helpful when sending an eKey to a guest who you don’t want to have permanent access to your home. The Kevo lock also comes with a “fob”, which is a Bluetooth enabled device that provides non-smartphone users with the same one touch convenience. The fob comes pre-enrolled with the lock, so there is not additional setup required. It is about the same size as a key, and simply just needs to be on the user in order to open the lock. The only features that non-smartphone users would be missing is access to the Kevo app, which is what allows you to send an eKey, view lock activity, and manage other features of the lock.

The Kevo lock has many security measures in place to ensure that it is just as safe as a regular lock that requires a key. For example, it can detect if the authorized phone or fob is inside or outside of the house. This means that even if the user’s phone is inside the house, an unauthorized user outside wouldn’t be able to gain entrance into the house. The lock also has SmartKey technology, which is “tested to the most stringent lock picking, bumping and physical security standards”.

Kevo is compatible with smartphone that support Bluetooth Smart Ready/Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and have an available mobile app. However, the app is only currently available for the iPhone 4s, 5, 5C, and 5S. It retails for $219 and is available for pre-order on amazon.com, build.com, newegg.com, and at Home Depot.

  1. Olivia’s title is very well done. I know just from the headline that this post is about a new one-touch entry lock that involves brand new technology. Her post is very well structured because of the progression of her writing. The beginning is an introduction to the company and what the product is. Then as the post continues she explains how the device actually works. Then, the last paragraph says for what mobile devices this new lock is available on. The placement of the pictures and the video make understanding the product easier because it shows me what the product actually looks like. The two pictures are spaced well and are relevant to the surrounding paragraphs. The first picture surprised me because I expected the Kevo lock to look different than a normal lock. Lastly, she did a great job with putting four relevant links and a video throughout the post.

Aside from how informative and well structured this post is on this new lock, I don’t see really any connection to our reading of our textbook. Chapter 5 really refers to the birth of photography, movies, and television and where they are today. Something I would add is a connection to the textbook. For example, how movies, television, and photography have developed over the years with the development of new technology and now with new technology locks are easier to use. The only other thing I would add is some opinion; the entire post was factual.

  2. Olivia had a very well structured blog. This structure was strong throughout and made it easy to understand this new piece of technology on the market. The links and pictures are used effectively. While I was getting near the end of the article I was looking for the lock actually being used, and then there was the video of it actually working.

The main point of explaining the Kevo lock was done effectively. I was able to gain enough information of all the features and capabilities of the new technology.

While there was plenty information about the product there was not much of an argument there or any connection to the reading. I would like to have known how well the technology was faring doing on the market and if it was a dependable piece of equipment. Also, I do not see how this connects to movies, photography, or technology. If you wanted to include the connection then it would help to discuss how they have been marketing such a new technology through these mediums.

  3. Olivia has good use of organized picture and video content. When i was reading I felt as if they were placed at the perfect points to assist me with the reading content. She starts off all with a descriptive title and an informative background on how this product started. I like how she first talks about the main feature of the product (getting in a lock with the touch of a finger) and then goes into to secondary features (sending eKeys to others). It was wise of Olivia to involve some external links on the topic to go with her pictures and content, it really ties it all together.

Olivia really couldn't do a better job explaining the new product. However, I think she did miss two important parts in this post and that is: connecting her content to the chapter 5 and she really doesn't have a conclusion. For the conclusion she could have said something like "I think the new technology from Keikset is bound to be successful because ... (points from her post)". And as for relating back to the textbook, she could have talked about the pictures and video she included and include some facts on the media or why or why not she thought the media was persuasive.

Overall, well organized, good use of links and visuals. Could have used a little bit of her own input, It seems as if she was just spitting out facts that she read.
